Jud Blazek, Natural Resources Biologist/Histotechnologist
Project: Oyster Disease Research
Diagnostics and Histology Laboratory staff member. Provides histotechnological
and diagnostic services to various Maryland aquatic animal disease
research and health monitoring projects at the COL.
Performs routine and specialized necropsies for molecular biology techniques, routine and special histological processing and staining,
and quantitative microbiological assays for protozoan pathogens of mollusks.
Ron Cheezum, Maintenance Chief
Ron is responsible for all maintenance activities at COL from ensuring Geothermal HVAC and seawater operations to grounds keeping.
Lewis "Skip" Collier, Captain
Captain of the R/V Laidly, a 55' steel hull NOAA vessel located at the Cooperative Oxford
Laboratory in Oxford, Maryland. Skip is responsible for maintenance, navigation
and operation of this vessel for scientific research, educational tours, or for
use by outside sources.
Dr. Cindy Driscoll, State Fish & Wildlife Veterinarian
Project: Fish and Wildlife Health
Leads the Fish & Wildlife Health Project. Coordinates field investigations
for morbidity and mortality events for all species of fish and wildlife/natural
resources in MD. Responds to fish and wildlife events and stranded marine mammals and sea
turtles, conducts necropsy examinations, collects life history data and collects
samples for analysis. Provides response, monitoring, research, outreach for fish and wildlife in
MD. Manages budget, personnel, grants and contracts.
Chris Dungan, Oyster Disease Research Scientist
Project: Oyster Disease Research
Funds, supervises, conducts, and reports intra- and collaborative
extra-mural laboratory research on pathogens and diseases of Chesapeake Bay
molluscs and finfish, conducts annual survey analyses to monitor the health of
wild mollusc populations, and provides diagnostic and histological services to
other State and Federal projects investigating diseases and monitoring the
health of crabs, finfish, molluscs, marine mammals, and sea turtles.
Kelly Greenhawk, Programmer Analyst & GIS Specialist
Project: Information Services
DP Programmer Analyst who functions as the primary data management agent through application programming and database management in support of shellfish, finfish, marine mammals and wildlife native to the Chesapeake Bay. GIS lead for Fisheries Service with primary responsibility for bay bottom & shellfish resource mapping.
Lee Hamilton, Environmental Specialist
Project: Oyster Disease Research Lab Manager
Develops, tests, and performs immunoassays for detection of protozoan
pathogens of estuarine shellfish; produces mono- and polyclonal antibodies
specific for protozoan shellfish pathogens; isolates, propagates, and preserves axenic
in vitro cultures of fish and shellfish pathogens; and maintains and
manipulates vertebrate cell cultures for bioassay and antibody development
tasks. Conducts and reports on grant-funded research projects. Schedules and supervises lab projects.
Stuart Lehmann, Faculty Research Assistant

Keith Lockwood, Fisheries Biologist
Writes the weekly fishing reports, fishing related articles and develops content for the Fisheries Service website. Maintains state records of Maryland sport fish; verifies and certifies all record submissions and writes related press releases. Tournament director for the Maryland Fishing Challenge award program for trophy sport fish caught by anglers as well as all catch & release awards and My 1st. Fish certificates. Involved in developing video material for the Fisheries Service website and distribution; coordinates the Fisheries Service displays at Sportsman’s Shows as well as outreach and education to the Maryland fishing community.
Mark Matsche, Natural Resources Biologist

conducts fish health research in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

fish pathology reports. Responds to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, conducts necropsy examinations,
and assists with sea turtle tagging study. Provides public
outreach of fish and wildlife health issues in MD.
Brian Richardson, Program Manager
Project: Restoration and Enhancement
Leads fish hatchery production, fish stock enhancement, and restoration of migratory fish species statewide. Program cultures more than one dozen species to meet state management needs such as “put and take” trout fishing, corrective stocking in state waters, tidal largemouth bass enhancement, fishing rodeos and outreach projects. Conducts restoration projects for American shad, hickory shad and Atlantic sturgeon. Conducts Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) permit research to support new aquaculture drug approvals from U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Debra Vreeland, Administrative Officer
Provides administrative support to the COL Program staff. Prepares budget,
budget projections, expenditure reports, spending forecasts and budget information requests. Supervises facility and grounds maintenance.
