Accomplishments of Restoration
and Enhancement Projects

The
multitude of projects conducted by the Hatcheries and Finfish Restoration
program have been very successful and beneficial to both the resources and
citizens of Maryland.
Highlights from 2009 include:
- Assessment activities performed by the Anadromous Restoration project are documenting the continued success of the shad restoration project. Populations continue to expand in the Patuxent River, Choptank River and Nanticoke River.
- The Maryland DNR Anadromous Restoration project have stocked 2,404,000 larval, 358,000 early juvenile, and 26,160 late juvenile coded wire tagged American shad in the Patuxent River, Choptank River, and Nanticoke River.
- The Maryland DNR Anadromous Restoration project have stocked 3,138,000 larval, and 242,000 early juvenile hickory shad in the Patuxent River, Choptank River, and Nanticoke River.
- 202,000 largemouth bass were produced by Maryland DNR, of those, 18,800 were coded wire tagged.
- 125,000 walleye fingerlings were stocked.
- 151,000 bluegill, 30,000 redear sunfish, and 5,100 hybrid sunfish were produced in 2009.
- 8,000 muskellunge and 20,000 tiger muskellunge were produced in 2009.
- Approximately 558,000 total trout were produced in Maryland in 2009.
- 1,080,000 striped bass were produced in 2009 for research and enhancement stocking.
- Approximately 80 sub-adult Atlantic sturgeon are being held in a captive breeding program. Upon reaching maturity, fish will be spawned and progeny will potentially be stocked into target tributaries. Approximately 1,000 juvenile Canadian origin Atlantic sturgeon are being held in multiple aquaculture facilities throughout the state of Maryland. These fish are being held for scientific purposes including: sperm cryopreservation techniques, culture techniques, marking methodology, feeding and nutritional studies and genetic analysis.
