Tidal Bass
Enhancement
The tidal largemouth
bass enhancement project is coordinated by Maryland DNR Fisheries Service
Regional Operations. The Hatcheries and Finfish Restoration program cultures
and tags fish for the project. The goal of the project is to enhance largemouth
bass populations in Maryland tidal waters. Largemouth bass survive very
well in tidal waters but reproduction can be poor. Stocking maintains the
resident population and can even supplement that population to enhance recreational
fishing opportunities. There are several benefits to be gained by this work:
- The resource is
optimized for the user group i.e. recreational anglers.
- There is an increased
interaction among user groups and resource managers.
- Data collected is
shared throughout Regional Operations, resulting in an enhanced understanding
of these tidal populations and the effects of hatchery stocking.
Tidal tributaries recently
stocked with largemouth bass include the Gunpowder River, Middle River,
Patuxent River and Potomac River.
