Seventy year old Bel Air, MD resident, George Hemelt, broke the Spanish mackerel State record October 2, 2002 while fishing aboard Loosen Up, a Deale Charter Boat, with Captain Frank Carver and First Mate Joe Hawk. The Spanish mackerel weighed 10.99 pounds, measured 32.5 inches in length, and had a girth of 16 inches. Loosen Up was trolling the Chesapeake Bay at Buoy 83 at 12:15 p.m. when the mackerel hit a spoon attached to 80 pound test line. The previous State record was caught October 10, 1999 and weighed 9 pounds 6.25 ounces. The fish was officially weighed at the Deale Food Rite and verified by DNR biologist, Angel Bolinger.
