Since the early 1990's the Maryland Fisheries Service has conducted a Black Bass Tournament Study aimed at creating an index that can be used to compare tournament catch rates from year to year. This index is expressed as catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) and represents the number of fish caught per angler per hour.

The Fisheries Service uses this data in conjunction with annual electrofishing samples to help characterize the bass population in the State. In the past, Inland Fisheries has collected tournament information by having a technician at as many events as possible. This year, we would like to supplement our data by having clubs/organizations fill out a tournament summary sheet and send it to us directly. A technician will still be collecting data at many of the larger events, but this direct reporting approach will greatly improve our ability to detect trends or differences in angling catch rates over a broader area and throughout the entire angling season. We are asking that black bass tournament organizers fill out our online survey page or print out a tournament summary sheet (links below) and send it back to us through regular mail by way of the mailing address below. This information is an important tool in monitoring the bass population in Maryland and we look forward to hearing from as many bass fishing clubs as possible.
