Land managers including local governments and conservation lands can take actions to prepare for and manage Emerald Ash Borer.

  1. Conduct a tree inventory. Include size, species, location, and condition information. Inventories can include all species to help prepare for other future threats.

  2. Develop a response plan.

    • Treatment - Maryland Forest Service offers 50/50 cost share for treatments on public land. The most effective treatments, trunk injections with emamectin benzoate, are conducted by licensed pesticide applicators.Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Program and Application​.

    • Removal - remove selected trees early to minimize safety hazards and costs.

    • Replanting - replant with a diversity of native species. Click here for more information on planting assistance programs.

    • Utilization - your ash trees may have value for lumber, wood products, firewood, or mulch.

    • Outreach - news articles, tree tags, signs, and social media can help get the word out to citizens in your area.
