The Atlantic oak-gum-cypress forest association is found along the Chesapeake Bay and the lower western and eastern shore areas of the Coastal Plain. These forests are characterized by wet soils. Often, these sites are flooded during most of the growing season.

Slight changes in species composition may occur following natural disturbance or planned treatments depending on seed sources and the height of the water table. Prolonged periods of deep flooding generally prohibit most other forest associations from becoming established.
