Loblolly pine is a minor but important component, representing about 20% of the composition. Hardwood species reflect the amount of soil moisture on the site.

Associated tree species on moist sites in coastal areas include:
sweetbay, magnolia, redbay, blackgum, and red maple.

Associated tree species on moist inland areas include:
sweetgum, water oak, cherrybark oak, swamp chestnut oak, white ash, yellow-poplar, American elm, red maple, and pignut hickory.

Associated tree species on drier sites at higher elevations include:
southern red oak, post oak, northern red oak, scarlet oak, shagbark hickory, pignut hickory, mockernut hickory, and blackgum.

Understory plants include:
inkberry, blueberry, southern bayberry, yaupon, rusty blackhaw, possumhaw, American holly, French mulberry, tree sparkleberry, flowering dogwood, hawthorn, sourwood, blackberry, green brier, wild grape, yellow jessamine, honeysuckle, and supple-jack.

Herbaceous plants include:
uniola, panicum, sedge, and beard grass.

In areas where the soil moisture is optimal for loblolly pine, or where fires occur frequently, the loblolly pine-hardwood association will persist. In areas less suited for loblolly pine, this association will gradually convert to hardwood associations.
