Tree City USA
Each year the National Arbor Day Foundation, with assistance from the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes counties, towns, cities and military bases for their efforts in public tree care. Communities that meet program criteria are recognized as Tree City USA communities.There are four things communities must have to be recognized as a Tree City USA:
Applications must be submitted to MD DNR-Forest Service by December 31st. Participation in the program by Maryland communities grew by 15% to 37 communities for 1997. If you would like to join the ranks of Maryland Tree City USAs, contact the Maryland Department of Natural Resources-Forest Service at 410-260-8507. A list of the outstanding communities recognized as Tree City USA winners in 1998 for their achievements in 1997 is provided below:
- A Tree Board or Department responsible for tree care;
- A Tree Ordinance;
- A Community Forestry Plan supported by spending of at least $2.00 per capita, and;
- An Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
