Educational Kits
The library has partnered with DNR's Education Team to
provide interactive educational kits. Kits are appropriate for grades 4 - 8, and are a
great resource for school visits, scout troops, or weekend
activities. Kits may be checked out for one week. The following kits are
available at the DNR library:
Who Polluted? - Each student plays a role in the story
of a watershed and the activities happening on a particular
day. Through this interactive story, students learn how
everyone plays a part in the health of our rivers, streams,
and Chesapeake Bay.
Sum of the Parts - Students theoretically inherit one
million dollars and riverfront property to develop as they
wish. Students illustrate their plan to develop their
property, discuss how they will use the available resources,
and identify actions they think may pollute the waterway.
Students learn the difference between point and nonpoint
source pollution and how the land uses of each property owner
contribute to overall water quality within the watershed.
Wetland Metaphors - A variety of objects representing
wetland characteristics help students visualize and remember
the valuable role of wetlands. Students will describe the
characteristics of wetlands and evaluate the importance of
wetlands to wildlife and humans.
Macroinvertebrate Mayhem - Students learn how macroinvertebrates are used as biological indicators to assess
water quality and ecological health of streams and rivers.
Participants will identify macroinvertebrates that are
sensitive to pollutants and those that are pollution tolerant,
indicators of good and poor water quality, and then play a
game of tag to simulate the effects of environmental stressors
on macroinvertebrate populations.
