Maryland State Government Agencies - Trail Resources
The Department of Transportation recognizes bicycling and walking as integral
elements of a multi-modal approach to transportation. With the Maryland
Transportation Plan, MDOT, allied with committed citizens, has the opportunity
to strengthen and build upon the accomplishments of the past and make bicycling
and walking a convenient, efficient, and enjoyable option within the framework

In response to growing interest in trails, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) led a comprehensive interagency planning effort to develop a long-term strategic plan that will guide implementation of a seamless trail network throughout the State. The Maryland Trails: A Greener Way To Go Plan communicates a vision for trail development in Maryland and provides policy direction for partner agencies and local governments. The Plan serves as a coordinated and strategic approach for developing a connected system of trails throughout the State, improving existing trails, and ensuring smart planning for future trail development. Bicycles on MTA is one of the Maryland Transit Administration’s Go Green
programs keeping our state on the move while fostering a healthy environment.
Public transportation and bicycles provide more mobility options to everyone,
help improve air quality and reduce traffic congestion. In Maryland, public transportation and
bicycles can and do work together to allow for longer trips. That’s smart transportation – the
ability to move seamlessly between transit modes in a healthy, enjoyable manner.
To make transit convenient for bicyclists, the MTA has, for some time,
allowed riders to bring bicycles onto Light Rail, Metro Subway and in some
cases, MARC Train. Bicycles can go along for the ride free of charge on MTA
Local Buses as buses are outfitted with new front-mounted bike racks. To get the
most out of biking, stow your bicycle at an MTA-provided bicycle rack or locker
located at stations and stops along the system.

Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM) is a place full of
secrets waiting to be unearthed. Whether you come to hike
our miles of trails, explore our Visitor Center full of
interactive exhibits, or to enjoy one of our educational
programs or events, you will leave with a greater
appreciation for the land and the people who once lived
here. JPPM encompasses 560 scenic acres, including 5 marked
trails and more than 70 identified archaeological sites along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland.
JPPM is also the home of the Maryland
Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab), which
houses over 8 million artifacts. The MAC Lab serves as a
clearinghouse for archaeological collections recovered from
land-based and underwater projects conducted by State and
Federal agencies throughout Maryland. All of these
collections are available for research, education, and
exhibit purposes to students, scholars, museum curators, and
educators.
