How can we get rid of abandoned boats in our waterways?

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) budgets $250,000 annually to remove abandoned boats and debris from state waterways from the Waterway Improvement Fund. The fund was created in 1966 to support the development, use and enjoyment of all waters. It provides financial support in form of grants/loans for a wide variety of boating projects and services. Each year these funds are used to remove tons of debris and approximately 50 abandoned boats from Maryland waters.

If someone abandons a boat on your private property, please call the Natural Resource Police (NRP) at 410-260-8888. An officer will call you, investigate the matter and advise you accordingly. You may also call DNR Boating Services at 410-260-8771. An investigation request will be made on your behalf with NRP. You may also obtain information on how to claim an abandoned vessel at the DNR website at http://dnr.maryland.gov/download/B117_abinstuction.pdf
