How do I report illegal or unsafe activities on our waterways?

DNR appreciates any help you can give them in protecting our natural resources! Please let our Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) know about any potentially illegal or unsafe activities you observe while out on the water this summer.

A citizen may report an illegal activity, such as possession of illegal or over limit fish species, illegal commercial seafood harvest practices, or unsafe boating practices - such as operating a vessel while intoxicated or a boater that may need assistance - to the NRP Communications Center at 800-628-9944. When calling this number you will be connected to a Police Communications Operator (PCO), who will take the information regarding your complaint and then dispatch the nearest Natural Resources Police Officer or forward the information to the correct agency representative. The PCO will need the location that the incident is occurring, the nature of the call, the description of the people involved, including their vessel/vehicle description, and the callers name and phone number.

Callers may remain anonymous, but by leaving a return phone number, the Officer may speak to the caller directly. Many complaints require detailed information for proper resolution. When a caller provides a return phone number, it enables the complaint to be investigated more thoroughly when additional information is needed by the Officer.

Working together, we can make our waterways a safer place to swim, fish and play during the summer months and protect the treasured natural resources that belong to the public trust.
