NRP Criminal Investiagations Unit (CIU)

The primary purpose of the Maryland Natural Resources Police Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) is to be the lead resource for the agency for all in-depth criminal investigations and death investigations. In-depth investigations include: major felony marine thefts, fatal boating accidents and hunting accidents. Additionally the CIU can assist in the following cases:
- All Fatal Boating and Hunting Accidents.
- Major Felony Criminal Cases both on the States waterways and on State Managed lands.
- Major Conservation related crimes via the Covert Unit.
- Assist Field units with the preparation and service of both Arrest and Search and Seizure Warrants.
- Assist Field units with Interview and Interrogation.
- Assist Field Units with advice on any Misdemeanor Investigation.
- Assist the Tax Fraud Unit with major investigations.
- Assist Search Managers with investigative matters surrounding a search for a reported missing person in which the NRP are the primary investigating unit.
- Act as a liaison with other police agencies and the Office of The Chief Medical Examiner.
- Assigned to special task forces or other enforcement initiatives as determined by the NRP Special Operations Division Unit or Division commander.
