DNR is awarded Civil Rights Best Practices by USFWS

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently received the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) FY11 Civil Rights Best Practices Award for its work in “ensuring equal access to the programs, activities and facilities of DNR.”

DNR is the first-ever recipient of the Service’s Best Practices Award. According the Service, DNR was honored for their dedication, hard work and professionalism in pursuing Best Practices, while ensuring that no person or group is left behind.

USFWS honored DNR Best Practices for their work in:

  • Establishing an active mediation and conflict resolution program, training 20 employees in mediation skills, to assist in public issues.
  • Arranging training for 45 DNR staff members on disability access.
  • Completing an updated language access plan, with support and sponsorship from the top leadership.
  • Securing $310,000 to pay for accessibility renovations at DNR facilities
  • Involving a Disabilities Advisory Council of 11 subject matter experts that meet quarterly.
The “Civil Rights-Best Practices” Award was signed by the Service's Assistant Director for Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program.

Nominations by State Fish and Wildlife Agencies were scrutinized by a Departmental civil rights expert to verify that the actions described in their nominations were indeed Best Practices.
