South Mountain Battlefield

The Weverton challenge

A scenic view of the Appalachian Trail

Introduction To Quest

Discover part of the Appalachian Trail as it winds 41 miles through Maryland State Parks, along the South Mountain ridgeline. This quest is not for the faint of heart! The Weverton Challenge, an extreme Quest, is a strenuous 1 mile hike climbing to an elevation of 750 ft above sea level, reaching the breath-taking Weverton Cliffs overlook. There is a less strenuous hike for younger or less experienced hikers- the half mile basic Quest covers a lesser distance. While embarking on the Weverton Challenge, you and your team will be tested to the limits! On your hike you will discover the natural wonder, peace, beauty, and some of the history the Maryland portion of the Appalachian Trail has to offer. So keep your eyes open! The hike to the cliffs and back will be 2 miles round-trip and take 1- 1.5 hours. Give yourselves time to explore and enjoy the views from the cliffs.
