The Park
To
commemorate the life of a true American hero and historical icon, the Maryland
Park Service has dedicated a new State Park in Dorchester County to
Harriet Ross Tubman. Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park was
created in 2007 on the 17.3 acre Linthicum tract, which was acquired through a
land swap with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The transaction was funded by
the Department of Natural Resources Program Open Space, and assisted by The
Conservation Fund.
Visitors to the park will benefit from a collaborative effort with the
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The Park and Refuge Visitor Centers will be
physically and intellectually linked to one another through programming,
multi-use trails and roads.
The park, which sits on the trailhead for the 125‐mile Harriet Tubman
Underground Railroad Byway and All American Road will also provide an
orientation to Tubman and Underground Railroad heritage sites and programs
within the county and region. It will be a place to begin a chronological and
geographical pilgrimage tracing Tubman’s steps on the Underground Railroad to
New York and Canada, also noted as a Scenic Byway.
Pets are permitted in the Park.
