Access In addition to a boat ramp, anglers may also shore fish from the break wall or use the T-dock next to the concession stand. Mattawoman Creek also offers access to the Potomac River.

Hazards/Restrictions Anglers ages 16 and over need a Maryland fishing license. Be aware of upcoming storms and strong winds. Check for current creel limits and size. The concession stand is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during the summer months. It is closed entirely during the winter months. Please call the park headquarters for hours at 301-743-7613.
Potable Water Potable water is available at the concession stand. None is available during winter months.
Species Large mouth bass, striped bass (or rockfish), bluegill, mud and channel catfish, white and yellow perch, pike, occasionally crappie, croaker and gar.
Natural Features Launch and marina are on the Mattawoman Creek, a short distance from the Potomac River.
Historic/Cultural Features The park is named for General William Smallwood. He was an officer during the Revolutionary War and was once governor of Maryland. The park is on what was part of his plantation. The home is still standing and is open for touring on Sunday afternoons.
Services For the traveling boaters, 50 slips are available for rent. These slips offer electric, non-potable water hook-up, shower and picnic facilities. To use the launch, a $10 launch fee is charged. Gas, fishing supplies and licenses and some snacks are also available for purchase at the concession stand.
Camping Camping is available within Smallwood State Park. Small camper cabins are also available for rent.
Other Points of Interest Smallwood offers more than fishing. Several hiking trails and historic buildings exist within the 629 acre boundaries of the park. There are several parks and other historic sites within driving distance.

Fees or Permits A small entrance fee is charged on weekends and holidays during the summer months. A valid Chesapeake Bay fishing license is required for all over the age of 16. The marina sells fishing licenses. A $10 fee is charged for boat launch.
Description Smallwood State Park and Sweden Point Marina have been a destination for many an angler in past years. This is perhaps because the facility offers some of the nation's best large mouth bass fishing. Throughout the year, many fishing tournaments are held here and will attract anglers from far and wide.
