Description This is an opportunity to walk back in time through the hills surrounding the historic Jerusalem Village. This village is one of the many water-powered mill sites that bordered the Little Gunpowder Falls, just like those on the Big Gunpowder Falls. However, this site, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is unusual because it has so many remaining structures from its earlier days.
The trail leaves from the edge of the woods behind the blacksmith shop and soon enters the former millrace, which supplied water to power the water wheels of Jerusalem Mill. While in the millrace, look for some stone or concrete foundations that formed the sides of the "waste gate" where excess water was released back into the stream. Enjoy views of a farm field, where the millrace widens as it enters the former ice pond site.
When the trail rejoins the stream bank, look for the foundations of the old millpond dam and the head of the millrace. The trail continues along the floodplain of the Little Gunpowder Falls, then climbs a hill with views of the river. When the trail forms, turn right onto the blue blazed trail to return to the parking area following the ridges high above the stream valley (2.5 miles round trip) or turn left and continue following the Little Gunpowder Trail until it meets Bel Air Road (4 miles round trip). This option crosses the scenic Wildcat Branch, a brook with boggy springs nearby that provide habitat for spring wildflowers.
See the Jerusalem Village and Jericho Covered Bridge Hike for another short walk to extend your hike once you return to the parking area.
