In celebration of a national movement to promote the importance of trails in the United States, Maryland State Parks have planned a series of outdoor activities on National Trails Day®, Saturday, June 1st. These family-friendly events include an array of activities, including guided hikes, trail maintenance projects, invasive plant removal, birding, “TRAILgating” party, geocaching, bicycling, and paddling trips.

Sponsored by the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day® occurs on the first Saturday of every June and encourages people of all ages to discover and enjoy America’s vast network of trails. Trails give you the opportunity to get your heart pumping, lungs expanding, and muscles working at various levels of difficulty, thereby improving your physical and mental well-being.

National Trails Day Celebration at Cunningham Falls State Park
Cunningham Falls State Park

Description: Volunteers are needed to help clean and upgrade trails around Cunningham Falls. Participants are invited to celebrate their hard work with a day working in the beautiful outdoors and a visit to the falls. Work will start at 9 a.m. and will continue until 3 p.m. National Trails Day occurs on the first Saturday of every June and encourages people of all ages to discover and enjoy America's vast network of trails. Volunteers should wear clothes appropriate for trail work, gloves and sturdy boots and bring water, snacks, insect repellant and enthusiasm for making a difference in our State Parks.
Cost: No cost for volunteers
Directions: From Baltimore and points East: Follow I-70 west to Frederick, and US 15 North to Thurmont. Continue Northbound on Route 15. Take the exit for Route 77 and travel west. Turn left on Catoctin Hollow Road to reach the Houck Area. Follow signs to lake and falls parking.

National Trails Day Ride Like A Girl Event

Description: Join the Southern Maryland Mountain Biker's for National Trails Day at St. Mary's River State Park for "Ride Like a Girl" on June 1st at 10 a.m. Equipment needed: A mountain bike in good working order, bike helmet, sneakers or biking shoes (no open toe shoes). Ages: 16 and up. Co-Sponsored by: Bike Doctor Waldorf/Southern MD Crew Mtn Bike Team.

Description: Enjoy a morning paddle down the serene waters of the Pocomoke River. Discover the wonders that abound on the river as you travel into the swamp. Meet at the Boat Rental Area by the river-front. $20 per canoe or tandem kayak, $15 per single kayak. Have your own canoe or kayak bring it along for just $5 per person.

National Trails Day Maintenance Hike
Sandy Point State Park

Description: Celebrate National Trails Day this year at Sandy Point State Park. Participate in a maintenance walk through the woods where we will remove light trash and upgrade a trail. This is an opportunity to see a different side of the park. Besides helping to maintain our trail, you will have the chance to enjoy the natural beauty around you as we journey through a variety of habitats, ending with a picture perfect view of the Sandy Point Lighthouse. The walk is approximately 1.5 - 2 miles roundtrip on flat terrain. Wear sturdy shoes and remember to pack work gloves, water, a snack, insect repellant, binoculars and your camera.

Directions: Sandy Point State Park is located Anne Arundel County, at the western terminus of the Bay Bridge, off U.S. Routes 50/301 at exit 32.

National Trails Day Introduction to Basic Trail Maintenance
Fair Hill NRMA

Description: Come celebrate National Trails Day with the Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area staff by joining them for an "Introduction to Basic Trail Maintenance" workshop, covering native vs. invasive vegetation identification, pruning techniques, drainage solutions, and identifying common trail problems. We will meet at Parking Lot #2 near the Covered Bridge for a family friendly information session on how to maintain Fair Hill's pristine trail environment. Following the clinic we will introduce the Adopt-A-Trail program to all attendees which will provide a new volunteer opportunity for all ability levels. This is an educational program that will provide users with basic trail sustainability techniques. Please come prepared with sturdy hiking shoes, water, work clothes and a camera if you would like. You are also encouraged to attend the interpretive hike afterwards free of charge.

Directions: From the Rt. 273/Rt. 213 intersection, travel East on Rt. 273 one half mile and turn right onto Entrance Road #3. At the stop sign, make a left on Ranger Skinner Drive. Turn left on Kennel/Training Center Road. Travel one-half mile and turn right onto Tawes Drive. Follow Tawes Drive 1 mile until it ends at Parking Lot #2 at the Covered Bridge.

National Trail Day Colonial Children’s Hike
Fort Frederick State Park

Description: Come enjoy a ranger led Colonial Children's hike at the historic Fort Frederick State Park. The hike will be .4 of a mile in length on gravel trail that twists along a wetland that lies between the C&O Canal and the park's campground. Hike participants will have the opportunity to learn about the life, habitat, and importance of the beaver; the importance of wetlands to environment; and enjoy nature's beauty. In addition to beavers, the pond is frequented by various species of turtles, birds, and fish which provides ample opportunity for nature enthusiasts. Children of all ages and their families are welcome to attend. Fort Frederick also presents Colonial Children's Day on this Saturday which presents families with a unique opportunity to learn about the historical and natural aspects of Fort Frederick and its surrounding area.
Cost: $3 in-state and $5 out of state per vehicle
Directions: Fort Frederick is located off of Interstate 70; use Exit 12 at State Route 56 near Big Pool, MD.

National Trails Day TRAILgating Party
New Germany State Park

Description: In celebration of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 1st, New Germany State Park will be hosting a "TRAILgating" party. The "party" will begin with volunteer opportunities from 9 a.m. - noon, which will include a variety of trail maintenance projects and removal of invasive plants. Please bring your own work gloves. Activities to include a guided 1 mile hike at 1 p.m. and a geocaching challenge at 3 p.m. Instructions given on the basics of geocaching will be followed by a competitive race to find caches hidden in the park. A limited supply of GPS units will be available for loan during the event. To conclude, there will be a campfire program at 7 p.m. "What's All the Buzz?" Garrett County bee keeper, "Hop" Cassidy, talks about this important pollinator. Meet at the Nature Center. Enjoy S'mores & some honey-related treats! There may also be local honey products available to purchase. All activities will begin at the New Germany Lake House.

Directions: West on I-70 to Hancock. Pick up I-68 and travel through Cumberland, Maryland. Continue west to Exit 22. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto Chestnut Ridge Road. Pass Comfort Inn and follow Chestnut Ridge Road for three miles to New Germany Road. Turn left and travel two miles to the New Germany State Park entrance on left. Park headquarters office is on the right before entering the park.

Description: Join our Naturalist for a closer look at Fair Hill's rolling field and forest habitat on a family-friendly one hour hike starting at the Covered Bridge. Explore along the Big Elk Creek and discover what the plants and animals of Fair Hill are up to in early June! Please come prepared with sturdy hiking shoes, water, and a camera (optional).

National Trails Day at Rocky Gap State Park

Description: Celebrate your love of Rocky Gap State Park's trails! Volunteer with park rangers and get your hands and clothes dirty working on maintaining and improving our popular trails. The project will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until noon. Volunteers must be 16 years old. Additionally, visitors of all ages are welcome to participate in a variety of guided hikes and trail-friendly activities offered throughout the day. Volunteer projects and guided hikes will begin at the Nature Center unless otherwise noted. National Trails Day Event at Patapsco Valley State Park

Description: Come out and enjoy the day and get your hands dirty. Volunteer with a Park Ranger and help maintain our trails in the McKeldin area. Trail work will include light and heavy work, and you will be working with shovels and picks. After the work day, there will be some ranger led programs in the area if you would like to stay and enjoy the rest of the day with us. Volunteers working the trails must be over 16 years of age or accompanied by an adult. Please wear closed toed shoes & long pants, bring gloves, water, a snack and anything else you would need for four hours.

National Trails Day Event at Patapsco Valley State Park

Description: Help to speed along a trail restoration project. Volunteer with a Park Ranger to reroute a trail and reclaim sections of old trail near the Hilton Area. Projects vary from light to heavy duty using hand tools such as shovels; pick axes, digging bars, and pruning shears for brush. After the work day, park naturalists will hold some programs in the area if you would like to stay and enjoy the rest of the day with us. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Closed toe shoes, long pants and sleeves, hat for sun, and work gloves are highly recommended as well as bringing water and snacks.

Directions: From I-695 (Baltimore Beltway), take Exit 13, Frederick Road west. follow for two miles and turn left on South Rolling Road. At first intersection, bear right in Hilton Avenue. Continue 1.5 miles and turn right into park. From I-95, take exit 47 (keep left on exit ramp), heading north (Route 166) to South Rolling Road. National Trails Day at Washington Monument State Park

Description: Volunteers will meet at Washington Monument State Park at 9 AM. There is no age limit for participants but youth are asked to be supervised by a parent or guardian. The Appalachian Trail work areas include Washington Monument, Wolfsville Road. and Turners Gap. Come out for a fun day of work and a complimentary meal afterwards. This event lasts until 3 p.m., but participants are not required to stay the entire time. Expert trail caretakers from PATC and Maryland Park Service will provide direction. Volunteers are asked to wear clothes appropriate for trail work, gloves, and sturdy boots. Volunteers should bring water, trail snacks, insect repellant, and enthusiasm to make a difference in their State Parks.

Directions:From points east: Washington Monument State Park can be reached off Interstate 70 westbound to Exit 49, MD Alternate Route 40. Travel westbound (turn left) on Alternate 40 for approximately 9 miles. At the top of South Mountain, turn right on Washington Monument Road. After 1 mile, the road intersects with Zittlestown Road at a four-way stop. Go straight to enter the park.

National Trails Day- Sustainable Trail Maintenance Hike

Description: Come join our Maryland Conservation Corps at Susquehanna Sate Park to celebrate national Trails day! We will be going on a hands-on interpretive "Trail Maintenance" hike along the mighty Susquehanna River and serene wooded trails within the park. Have you ever wondered how to sustainably maintain a trail system? Learn the basics of trail maintenance solutions by identifying problem areas and proper techniques to correct them sustainably. Along the way we will discuss how to assess trails for potential issues including, erosion, invasive vegetation removal, proper pruning, other common trail issues, and of course the natural beauty and history that surrounds. The hike will be approximately 1.5-2 miles in length on an easy and moderate trail. Please come prepared to get your hands dirty, and bring work gloves, sturdy hiking shoes, water, a snack, and insect repellent. Trail tools will be provided. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars!

National Trails Day Guided Hike
Tuckahoe State Park

Description: Join park staff for a guided hike at Tuckahoe State Park in celebration of National Trails Day. Bring the entire family to the Lore of the Land Trail (across from the Cherry Lane Ballfield) for a relaxing and entertaining 1.5 mile hike through scenic Tuckahoe. Enjoy the local flora and fauna, explore a variety of habitats and perhaps meet a couple local critters. Pre-registration is not required. See you on the trail!

Directions: From the Bay Bridge, travel east on Rt. 50/301 across the Bay Bridge. Rt. 50/301 splits, bear to the right on Rt. 50. Make a left at the intersection of Rt. 50 and Rt. 404. Go approximately 8 miles until you come to the intersection of Rt. 404 and Rt. 480. Make a left on Rt. 480. To your immediate left take Eveland Road. Once on Eveland Road follow directional signs to area of choice.
