From Interstate 68, take Exit 22. Follow Chestnut Ridge Road south 2 miles to the end, and turn left on New Germany Road. Follow New Germany Road south 5 miles, and make a left on Big Run Road. Follow Big Run Road east 5 miles to the end. The park is located at the intersection of Big Run Road and Savage River Road. Campsites - numbered 60 through 90 - are located at the intersection and along Big Run Road.
8 a.m. to SunsetCertain activities are permitted outside of the regular park hours (e.g. fishing, boat launch, hunting where permitted). Please check with the park before your visit if you plan to engage in an activity which requires you to be in the park before or after the posted hours.
Pets are allowed in the Big Run State Park campground and day-use area.
Situated at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir, Big Run State Park is the perfect base camp from which to enjoy the surrounding Savage River State Forest. Campers at Big Run have easy access to fishing, boating, hiking or hunting opportunities. Autumn visitors have a spectacular view of the changing colors on the surrounding mountain ridges.
There is no cell phone service at Big Run State Park. The nearest pay phone is located approximately 8 miles away, at 474 McAndrews Hill Road, Grantsville, Maryland (acorss the road from New Germany Lake).
Family CampingBig Run has 29 primitive campsites available year-round. Sites 60-75 are wooded, with stone dust camping pads. Sites 78-90 are in an open grassy field. Each campsite has a picnic bench and fire ring. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A self registration station is located in the lower camping area, along Savage River Rd. Pets are permitted in any of the campsites, on a leash.
Group Campsite/ShelterThe Monroe Run Pavilion is available for rental year-round. The shelter and three adjoining campsites can accommodate up to 25 people. Youth Group CampsiteThe Youth Group campsite is available by reservation. It has a central camping pad, with a fire ring and picnic table, and a parking area along the road. Tents may be set up on durable surfaces in the site. The site can accommodate up to 40 youth and adults. Check in for campsite guests is 3 p.m. and check out is 1 p.m.
Big Run State Park sits at the northern end of the Savage River Reservoir, a popular spot for fishing and non-motorized boating.
BoatingThere is a boat ramp between campsites 83 and 84 at Big Run State Park. Lake levels vary throughout the year, so be aware that you may have to carry your boat several feet. Only electric motors or non-motorized boats are permitted. Gasoline motors must be removed before launching your boat.
FishingFishing is permitted year-round with a non-tidal fishing license. Fishermen may find walleye, large mouth bass, crappie, yellow perch, bluegill, catfish, suckers, and trout. There is a brief lake closure each spring when trout stocking begins. A trout stamp is required to possess trout.
SwimmingSwimming is not permitted anywhere in the Savage River Reservoir.
