Greenwell State Park

Greenwell is a 596-acre State Park located on the Patuxent River in St. Mary's County, Maryland. In 1971, John Phillip Greenwell, Jr. and his sister, Mary Wallace Greenwell, donated their 166.6 acre farm to the State of Maryland for use as a public park for everyone. The state subsequently purchased the adjacent 430-acre Bond property and joined the two to form the existing park. The park is managed in partnership with The Greenwell Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing outdoor accessible recreation.

Sundays in the Park Returns to Greenwell

Sundays in the Park returns to Greenwell's Rosedale Manor on the second Sunday of every month beginning on November 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays in the Park is a family-friendly event where the community is welcome to come and browse the rooms of historic Rosedale Manor.

Rosedale was the home of John Philip Greenwell, Jr., who donated his land to the State of Maryland, and began the Greenwell Foundation, an independent, non-profit organization offering inclusive and accessible programs, services, and facilities within Greenwell State Park.

Self-guided tours of the manor house are available. Sundays in the Park is also an opportunity for brides-to-be to spend some time inside the manor house and envision what their special day will look like!

Features

• Hiking/Equestrian/Cycling - Ten miles of marked trails are open to the public year around. Please note that a portion of the Blue Trail is temporarily closed due to storm damage.
• Fishing - Visitors may fish from the pier or from the shoreline revetment year around. A sportfishing license is required for persons 16 years and older.
• Picnicking - Visitors are invited to picnic on the grounds. Pavilion can be reserved by calling the Greenwell Foundation at 301-373-9775. Maryland State Parks are "trash free". Please practice "Leave No Trace" principles and take your trash with you when you leave. To view these principles visit www.lnt.org.
• Hunting - Hunting is permitted during established seasons. Hunters may enter / remain on park property outside of the regular posted hours provided that they are engaged in legitimate, authorized hunting activity. Contact Point Lookout State Park (301-872-5688) for further details.
• Canoeing and Kayaking - Non-motorized craft can be walked in and launched from the beach area. We also have an accessible floating kayak and canoe launch that is wheelchair accessible and open to the public during regular park hours (sunrise to sunset). The Greenwell Foundation offers kayaking at its summer camps, as well as kayak outings and events for organizations for people with disabilities and for scouting and veteran groups. Lessons are offered through the College of Southern Maryland. All camp sessions and lessons are taught by ACA-certified instructors. This water program is fully accessible and provides instructional and recreational opportunities.
• Swimming - Swimming is permitted from the beach area only. Be advised that there is No Lifeguard on duty. Swimming is at your own risk.
• The park has an honor system, with service charges ($3/vehicle) benefiting the Greenwell Foundation to help operate the park.

About the Greenwell Foundation

The Greenwell Foundation, Inc. (http://www.greenwellfoundation.org/) is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization that works in partnership with the Maryland Park Service to provide accessible and inclusive programs, services and facilities for all community members, with and without disabilities, in Southern Maryland. The Foundation is based in Greenwell State Park.

The Greenwell Foundation offers therapeutic and recreational riding lessons, summer camp and nature camps, kayaking, accessible site rentals and is regularly developing new programs to meet community needs. More than 40,000 people visit the park annually, more than 500 people have participated in programs, and more than 1,000 people used the park's accessible facilities for family events and celebrations. The Greenwell Foundation also manages and rents the Rosedale Manor House and the Francis Knott Retreat Lodge.

The Rosedale Manor House

A focal point of the property is Rosedale Manor, circa 1880, which is situated on the shoreline of the Patuxent River. The Manor features a Victorian-style rose garden, a family chapel and a spectacular view of the river. The Manor may be rented for events such as weddings, reunions, meetings and conferences. Event support and planning is available for functions with 50 or fewer guests.

The Francis Knott Retreat Lodge

This modern facility is available to rent for meetings and retreats. The facility features sleeping quarters for up to 17 people, five bathrooms, a fireplace and a full-service kitchen. It also has a sunroom with dining tables for up to 25 people. The lodge is a great place to relax and feel at home, perfect for vacations and retreats. Additional Rental Options

When renting park facilities, guests may make arrangements to access other services to make their event even more enjoyable. Set in the heart of the park, Quarter Creek Pavilion is the place to hold your family reunion, birthday party or community event. The covered pavilion has picnic seating for up to 75 people and is fully equipped with barbeque grills and a large brick front fireplace for your enjoyment.

Maryland Conservation Corps

Greenwell State Park is supported by a Maryland Conservation Corps Program. The Maryland Conservation Corps (MCC) is an AmeriCorps program that engages young adults, ages 17-25, who want to dedicate a year of service to natural resource conservation. Over a ten to 11-month period, MCC members work as crews to complete 1,700 hours of service. Conservation service activities include: trail maintenance, environmental education, stream & wetland restoration, park facility improvements, invasive species removal and Bay grass planting. Extensive member training is provided, including: First Responder certification, Wildland Fire Fighting certification, Search and Rescue certification, Park Operations, Environmental Education and Interpretation, Chainsaw Safety, Leave No Trace and Canoe Trip Leading.

No minimum qualifications are required other than transportation to the designated job site and a desire to serve. Low-cost State Housing is available at certain crew sites. Benefits include a living allowance of $7.00/hour, health care benefits, child care assistance (if eligible) and a $4,725 education scholarship award for those members that complete $1,700 hours of service. MCC employs a Zero Tolerance Policy for any member who uses alcohol or illegal drugs while attending an MCC project, training or event.

Become a Volunteer for Greenwell State Park

Greenwell State Park offers an accessible office, trail to boat dock, day use area shelter and comfort station, and overnight facility. Accessible therapeutic horseback riding is available through the Greenwell Foundation. More than 100 volunteers regularly support the Foundation's programs by serving as volunteers in a therapeutic riding program, in the Foundation office, and by helping to maintain the park gardens, grounds, trails and facilities.
