2018 Training Information

Greetings friends of Maryland's freshwater streams!

Maryland Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) is gearing up for another exciting year! In 2018, we will have one training session for our volunteer stream sampling program, Maryland Stream Waders!

Beginning in 2018, sampling by volunteers will be focused ONLY in targeted watersheds (map below). Sampling outside of these watersheds will not be authorized.

Where: Oregon Ridge Nature Center

When: March 3rd, 2018 (Register by February 23rd),
9:00am – 3:30pm

Stream Waders volunteers will help to fill the gaps in areas of interest to the Maryland Biological Stream Survey crews in 2018. This year, your efforts will be supporting the MBSS by providing data on the effectiveness of various stream restoration projects.

Volunteers are trained and outfitted to collect benthic macroinvertebrate samples which are turned in to department biologists who subsample, identify, and rate the sites according to our Index of Biotic Integrity. Stream Waders is rigorous and produces data that are available to the public on the StreamHealth website.

  • We usually start around 9:00 A.M. but we ask that you come a little early to check in and enjoy a small complementary, continental style breakfast (juice, coffee, water, donuts, etc.).
  • Please pack your own lunch as we will be taking a break between the lecture training and the outside field training.
  • \Remember to pack plenty of warm clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. Boots are necessary, waders are a plus!!
