Sentinel Survey Sites Throughout Maryland

Sentinel Sites

Maryland DNR surveys 27 Sentinel Sites as part of the MBSS. These high quality areas represent the best remaining streams in Maryland, and are likely to be healthy in the future. They have been sampled annually since 2000 to demonstrate yearly changes in stream conditions. Sentinel Sites are used to assess the potential impact of global climate change on Maryland's streams. Other information is collected about:

  • Fish
  • Benthic Macroinvertebrates (e.g. insects, crayfish, and musssels)
  • Amphibians and Reptiles
  • Water Chemistry (e.g. temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen)
  • Physical Habitat
  • Land Use (e.g. forest, agriculture, and urban)

Thanks to crayfish experts from Marshall University, WV, a new photographic key to the crayfishes of Maryland has been developed and is now available. This key provides excellent photographs of Maryland’s nine native and five non-native crayfishes. High-resolution, detailed photographs of important anatomical characteristics make species-level identification a breeze…

This volume uses the data collected by the MBSS since 1994 to identify stressors (e.g., individual chemical parameters, physical habitat changes, invasive species, and general factors such as land use) that are affecting Maryland's streams. Identifying stressors is critical to meeting Clean Water Act mandates (e.g. TMDLs) and developing management actions that can restore or protect the desired condition of streams.

Assessing natural year-to-year variability in stream conditions requires high quality streams with minimal anthropogenic influences. Although there are no longer any pristine streams in Maryland, the MBSS has identified and monitored minimally impacted streams that represent all regions (i.e., Coastal Plain - eastern shore, Coastal Plain - western shore, Eastern Piedmont, and Highlands) and stream orders (1st through 3rd) in Maryland from 2000-2004. One of the most important potential uses of the MBSS is to support stream and riverine biodiversity management in the State. Recognizing this importance, this volume was prepared to highlight biodiversity findings from the MBSS as well as other sources, and to contribute to DNR's Wildlife Diversity Conservation Plan for conserving non-game species in Maryland. More than 2,500 quantitative MBSS sites and other qualitative data were assembled and assessed to provide one of the most detailed, broad-scale accounts of freshwater biodiversity and associated habitats available in the United States.
