Nitrite (NO2)

Status and Trends

Nitrite is analyzed in samples from 37 stations east of Hancock, MD. Median NO2 concentrations ranged from a low of 0.007 mg/L on the Gunpowder River at Gunpowder Road above Prettyboy Reservoir to a high of 0.22 mg/L on the Patuxent below Duckett Reservoir. Highest median concentrations (NO2 < 0.019 mg/L) were observed at one station on the Patuxent River. Lowest concentrations were observed at 54% of stations.

Trends in concentration were decreasing at 84% of all stations. Only the Choptank River station had increasing trends in nitrite concentration.
