2012 Beyond BOW Hiking/Backpacking Workshop
Western Maryland - June 16-17, 2012

In conjunction with Roam the Woods, Maryland BOW participants embarked on a two-day, one-night backpacking adventure on June 16th -June 17th. The trip started at Gathland State Park in Jefferson, MD, and participants hiked along the Appalachian Trail which followed the ridge on South Mountain.

Along the way, the group learned the basics of backpacking and gear, body mechanics, safety in the woods, water filtration and Leave No Trace principles.

After a night camping near the Ed Garvey shelter, the group learned about outdoor cooking, planning multiple day hikes and outdoor ethics before heading to the scenic Weverton Cliffs.

After descending South Mountain, the group headed along the historic C&O Canal to learn about its history while viewing abundant wildlife such as turtles and birds. The trip ended in Harper’s Ferry after crossing the Goodloe Byron Footbridge spanning the mighty Potomac River.
