Calcareous Woodlands

The rich and varied history of the Delmarva Peninsula is revealed by the presence of calcareous woodlands. This very rare type of forest developed on ancient oyster shell deposits that have been exposed on steep slopes above the tidal waters of the Chesapeake.

The Landowner Incentive Program is funding the establishment of a forested buffer and control of invasive species to protect one of these rare calcareous woodlands in Kent county.
