Coastal Plain Mature Forest

Coastal Plain Mature Forest

The mature forests of the coastal plain have been hard hit by our state's long history of human occupation, being repeatedly logged for their Delmarva Fox Squirrelvaluable timber, and invaded by non-native species that humans have introduced.

While these forests provide us places to hike, bike and relax, they are also home to rare species like Swainson's warbler, showy goldenrod, and the Delmarva fox squirrel.

The Landowner Incentive Program is funding several projects to benefit Coastal Plain Mature Forests: Swainsons Warbler photo courtesy of Alan Murphy

  • A watershed-scale invasive control and education program to benefit rare plant and animal species in the Parker's Creek and Governor's Run watersheds in Calvert County

  • A delayed timber harvest program in Somerset County to provide habitat for endangered Delmarva fox squirrels

  • A reforestation project in Dorchester county to provide a forested corridor linking Delmarva fox squirrel habitats

  • Removal of invasive Tree-of-Heaven from a forest in Charles County
