Surveillance Plan for the Early Detection of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus in Migratory Birds in the United States: Surveillance Year 2009
Duck Hunter Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Exposure to Avian Influenza (H5N1) in the United States
A survey of duck hunter knowledge, attitudes and practices across the United
States (US) found that both hunting practices and attitudes towards avian
influenza may impact their exposure to potentially infected birds or their
environment. Hunters with more than 10 years of experience reported increased
avian influenza awareness and more potential exposures.

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)
Avian Influenza (AI) or Bird flu as it is commonly referred to in the media has recently been receiving a lot of media attention. AI is a viral disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems of most species of domestic and wild birds.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) has been working closely with federal, state and local partners, including USDA, National Wildlife Health Center, USGS/ National Wildlife Refuges, National Parks Service, University of MD, Ohio State University, MDA, DHMH and local wildlife rehabilitators) to conduct active and targeted surveillance for AI in wild birds since June 2005 and will continue to expand monitoring efforts. Our collective efforts will combine with national and international efforts in monitoring wild bird populations to protect domestic animals and public health.
Sarcocystis: Rice Breast Disease In Waterfowl
A publication of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
When hunters notice an abnormality or apparent disease in wild game they are preparing for consumption, they naturally have questions regarding their observation – particularly how it might affect their own health or the health of people consuming the meat.
Sarcocystis, which causes very prominent changes in the breast muscles of waterfowl, is one such disease. Wildlife managers are frequently asked about this disease and the risks associated with handling or eating affected birds. This leaflet will answer the most commonly asked questions about Sarcocystis in waterfowl.
