Stems

Wavyleaf basketgrass stems are fuzzy hairy Japanese stiltgrass stems are smooth.

Leaves

Wavyleaf basketgrass leaves do not have a silvery stripe. Japanese stiltgrass leaves have a reflecting silver stripe down the middle of the leaf, or slightly to one side.
Wavyleaf basketgrass leaves have ripples across their width and taper quickly to an elongated sharp point. Japanese stiltgrass leaves end in a blunt gradual point.
