Wavyleaf Basketgrass
Management of Wavyleaf Basketgrass in Maryland
DNR is working with multiple public and private partners to find and remove this invasive grass. In 2008, we worked with the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Washington and Montgomery County Weed crews to treat over 90 infested acres with herbicide to reduce the chance that this grass would spread. This project was funded by a generous grant from the U.S. Forest Service. In 2009, with funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, we will do more targeted chemical control.
Baltimore City and Baltimore County have each dedicated staff or contractors’ time to finding where this grass exists on their properties. Volunteer groups are hand weeding this grass from public land in several locations.

Wavyleaf basketgrass is of interest not only because it is new to North America, but because it creates an Early Detection -- Rapid Response situation for scientists and land managers. This poster was presented at the 2008 Northeastern Weed Science Society meeting. Download a pdf version.
