Recognition

Blackish-brown fur tipped with silver.

Ears and tragus are short, blunt and naked.

Face, ears, feet and wing membranes are blackish-brown.

Similar Species

Hoary bat is much larger with densely furred interfemoral membrane.

Summer Roosts

Under loose bark, rock crevices clumps of leaves, woodpecker holes, bird nests, sometimes open sheds, garages or outbuildings. Not known to summer in Maryland.

Winter Roosts

Migrates. Under loose bark, rock crevices, clumps of leaves, woodpecker holes, bird nests, sometimes open sheds, garages or outbuildings.

Eats

Moths, true bugs, flies, mosquitoes, termites, and beetles.
