National Trails Day - June 3, 2017

Youth hiking in State ParkIn celebration of a national movement to promote the importance of trails in the United States, Maryland State Parks have planned a series of outdoor activities on National Trails Day®, Saturday, June 3rd. These family- friendly events include an array of activities, including guided hikes, trail maintenance projects, invasive plant removal, and more.

Sponsored by the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day® occurs on the first Saturday of every June and encourages people of all ages to discover and enjoy America’s vast network of trails. Trails give you the opportunity to get your heart pumping, lungs expanding, and muscles working at various levels of difficulty, thereby improving your physical and mental well-being.

National Trails Day Hike at Cunningham Falls State Park

Description: Consider spending National Trails Day helping with some maintenance at the park's Manor Area. Planned work includes replacing the split-rail fence along the Furnace Trail and a new kiosk at the trailhead for Bobs Hill. The Manor Area is located three miles south of Thurmont along US-15. Day use fees apply ($3 per Maryland vehicle, $5 out-of-state vehicle).

National Trails Day Mt. Bike Ride at Deep Creek Lake State Park

Description: Celebrate National Trails Day with a mountain bike ride on the new Beckmans and Indian Turnip Loops. Trails are narrow natural surface trails, so bring a bike intended to ride offroad. Helmets are required. Exact route dependent on turnout. Ride may last up to two hours so participants should being water and a snack. Day use fees apply.

National Trails Day at New Germany State Park - Katie's 5K

Description: Lace up your running shoes and prepare to be inspired. The Katie's 5K is an annual 5km race in memory of Katie DeRosa, a local 13-year-old who was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle while training for her freshman year of cross-country. The registration fee is $23 to $33.

National Trails Day at Patapsco Valley State Park

Join staff from Patapsco Valley State Park and REI to maintaining trails at the park's McKeldin area. Project is an improvement to the park's Switchback Trail. Meet in the meadow (field A) just inside the park beyond the contact station.
